Powdered Laundry Soap
1 bar Fels Naptha soap
1 cup Borax*
1 cup Washing Soda
Use a food processor to grate the Fels Naptha - just like a brick of cheese. There will be shreds and a few lumps, so you'll also need to use the blade spinner to then combine the lumpy soap with the Borax and washing soda. End result should be a fine, light yellow powder. Use 2 tablespoons per load.
Note: washing soda will soften hard water, a good thing, as hard water can turn whites gray!
* Borax, although a natural mineral, can be toxic to children and pets. Please keep out of their reach.

Low-Sudsing Laundry Gel:
1/2 bar Zote soap
1/2 cup Borax*
1/2 cup Washing Soda
Again, use a food processor to grate the Zote - this time, there's no need to reduce it down to a fine powder - just a rough grate is enough. On the stove, melt the grated soap into about 6 cups of boiling water. Then, add the Borax and washing soda and stir together. In a large bucket, combine this soap mixture with 2.5 quarts of hot water and continue to stir. Finally, add in one more gallon of water and let the mixture sit for at least 24 hours. Use a 1/2 cup in each load.

Whitening
Forget bleach - it's not green and damages fabric fibers. Soak whites in water & lemon juice, then set in the sun before laundering.
