Yeast-like critters that excrete renewable petroleum
Did you know that crude oil is only slightly different, molecularly, from the fatty acids excreted by yeast? Knowing this, it wasn't a huge leap for researchers to genetically engineer a yeast-like organism that can excrete the world's first renewable petroleum.

A company in Silicon Valley, LS9, is attempting to develop a system that could deliver such renewable petroleum on a global scale, although obstacles still remain. Their hope is to have a full-scale plant open in 2011, though it's unclear if such a plant could meet global, or even national, demand.

Still, here's a product for which there's no need to re-tool or retrofit. The end-product emerges almost completely ready to be pumped into existing gas tanks. And estimates are that renewable petroleum might start around $50 a barrel.
