Time of Day
Experts tell us to pump gas only in the morning - the earlier and chillier, the better. Gasoline storage tanks at service stations are located underground; when the ground temperature is colder, the gasoline itself is more dense. As ground temperature rises, the gasoline will expand, so pumping in the afternoon, when things are warmer, will net you slighty less gasoline for your money.

Don't Go Below Half
Have you noticed that the last half-tank of gas seems to go more quickly than the first half? That's largely because a gas tank under half empty is experiencing a lot more evaporation. It's a good idea to fill up when your tank is half-empty to avoid conditions involving more air inside your gas tank.

Pump Speed
The slower you pump gas into your tank, the fewer vapors you will create. Pumping at a faster rate of speed will churn up the gas, causing some to turn to vapor. When that happens, some of your gasoline will escape back into the hose's vapor return, and back into the underground storage tank.
