France's MDI Energy is working with an Indian company, Tata Motors, to produce cars with a compressed air engine. These new "air cars" are expected to be on the streets of India by August 2008. Top speed is said to be 68 mph, and it reportedly reduces the average costs of running a vehicle by as much as 80%. The first plant to produce these cars will be located in Melbourne, Australia. Estimates of its initial price offering are $8,000 US.

So where would you fuel up? Still at the corner gas station, but you'd use the compressed air nozzle, normally used to inflate tires, instead of the gas pump.

Another company, Air Car Factories, is also working on a vehicle with a compressed air engine. Their first model, The Air Car Eureka 1.1, is still in the design stage.
