The term "hypermiling" was coined by Wayne Gerdes, who has been successful at increasing his own gas mileage, not by purchasing a hybrid, but by changing his driving habits. The term now reflects any attempt to drive and maintain your car in a way that maximizes your gas mileage and reduces your fuel costs. We've only been hypermiling a short time, but have already seen dramatic results. We live in a mountainous region (lots of uphill driving) that's 20 miles from a city center, so we consume a lot of gas. But since employing even some of these techniques, we've gone from filling up every 4-6 days to now every 9 days. Like Gerdes, we don't own a hybrid - but have seen substantial mileage increases in our Audi A6.

Our favorite hypermiling tip? Coasting in neutral - our gauge jumps from 18 to 173 mpg when I flip into N.

This site is still being constructed, so not all gas-saving tips have been explored or presented, but please check back often, as more are continually being added.
