Decluttering the Green House
First, do no camouflage
Have you ever read that you should hide your overflowing clutter behind drapes? Please don't do this - clutter is about more than what's seen. Clutter is a psychological drain, and even if your guests don't know it's there, you do! After all, don't you feel the strain when a closet or cabinet is cluttered? Shutting the door doesn't help - purging does. So get the idea of camouflaging with curtains out of your head!

Pay attention to vertical surfaces
Even if you succeed in keeping clutter from taking over horizontal surfaces, something that can really trip you up is a cluttered vertifcal surface. Keep your walls mostly clear. Don't let bulletin boards or refrigerator doors get cluttered with scraps, photos, or lists. If you let your vertical surfaces pile out, before you know it, your horizontal surfaces are piling up. (Remember, clutter is mental. If you allow it anywhere, you'll eventually allow it everywhere.)

Keep discards in a thrift hamper
Designate the corner of a closet or your laundry room for housing discards that will be taken to a thrift shop. This trip should probably happen once a month. Keep a hamper or garbage can in your designated spot and whenever you see an item cluttering your home that you or your family members 1) don't use, 2) don't like, or 3) have outgrown, drop it in the receptacle.
